England's World Cup Winning Team

Yesterday Fabio Capello, the England coach made the 30 man provisional team choice he had to make for the Pre-World Cup friendlies out of which he will trim that down to a 23 man team who will be the lucky ones to jet off to South Africa. The current 30 man squad are as follows:

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart, David James, Robert Green

Defenders: Leighton Baines, Jamie Carragher, Ashley Cole, Michael Dawson, Rio Ferdinand, Glen Johnson, Ledley King, John Terry, Matthew Upson, Stephen Warnock

Midfielders: Gareth Barry, Michael Carrick, Joe Cole, Steven Gerrard, Tom Huddlestone, Adam Johnson, Frank Lampard, Aaron Lennon, James Milner, Scott Parker, Theo Walcott, Shaun Wright-Phillips

Forwards: Darren Bent, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe, Emile Heskey, Wayne Rooney.

I believe overall that this is a fantastic choice of players but there are a couple of people who should be included and not-included in my opinion. Obviously Fabio is the man for the job and I really want this year to be the year we win the World Cup, however, I am entitled to my own opinion so I thought I’d make my own squad list but already to put into their formation. I believe England work well with two different formations; 1 with the standard 4-4-2 formation; and the other with the lone striker up front with the midfielder’s with a license to roam.

White = 1st Choice; Yellow = 2nd Choice (or sub); Orange = 3rd choice (or sub)

With this formation, as you can see the midfield is held by Lampard and Gerrard and some would say that is a bad idea however one would have to choose the slightly defensive role. With Lampards current goal scoring form, he should be that further up the field than Gerrard. Terry and Ferdinand are experienced and reliable enough to defend. On the images you can also see some of the players that isn’t on Fabio’s list but the players which I think should be on it.

Rooney has shown many times he is more than capable of playing up front on his own or even Agbonlahor as he is a handful to defend against. With a player like Barry or Carrick looking after midfield, this gives both Lampard and Gerrard more freedom to do what they want and what they are good at. Even with the likes of Beckham in that central defensive midfield position would work as he is a good defender and he can provide that inch perfect pass/lob to the wide men who are all excellent controllers of the ball.

You might agree or disagree with my squad but I personally think this is what is required to score goals and not concede. Joe Hart has been fantastic this season in the Premier League and he should be our No.1 keeper!
